Megève — village, skiing and the art of living
Megève is rather different from most French ski resorts. It isn't simply a collection of hotels and apartment blocks built around a ski area; it is a beautiful, living Alpine village, with cobbled lanes, traditional chalets, smart boutiques and a lively town square at its heart.
Long before skiing arrived, Megève was a farming and livestock village. Its transformation began in the early 20th century when Baroness Noémie de Rothschild chose the village as the setting for a sophisticated French alternative to St Moritz. The Hôtel du Mont d'Arbois opened in 1921, and skiing soon followed. The Rochebrune cable car, introduced in 1933, helped establish Megève as one of France's great winter destinations.
Today, that blend of old-world Alpine character and understated glamour is what makes Megève so appealing. The skiing spreads across Rochebrune, Mont d'Arbois and Jaillet, while the village itself offers something that many purpose-built resorts simply can't replicate: somewhere you actually want to spend an evening.
Food is a big part of that. Megève has become one of the Alps' best-known destinations for gastronomy, from polished French restaurants to excellent mountain tables. For a truly special meal, Flocons de Sel is one of the names that has put Megève firmly on the culinary map, while places such as VOUS offer a more contemporary take on fine dining.
And that is really the appeal of Megève. You come for the skiing, but you stay for the village, the food, the atmosphere and the feeling that your holiday is about rather more than simply getting from chalet to chairlift.
